Solar Panel Installation in Kent

The covering and the structure are checked before panels are quoted. Mounting hardware fixed into tired battens is the most common cause of a leak on an otherwise good install.

MCS standard solar on a roof that can take it

The roof is surveyed before the array is quoted, because the covering and the battens have to carry the panels for the next twenty five years.

Mounting hooks fix through the covering into the rafters, and the tile above each hook has to be cut or dressed around it. Nearly every solar-related leak we are called to comes from hooks fixed into tired battens or tiles cut badly around the brackets, rather than from anything wrong with the panels.

Orientation matters less than most people expect and shading matters more. South is ideal but east and west facing arrays perform well, whereas a chimney or a mature tree shading part of an array reduces output across more of it than the shaded area alone would suggest. If the roof needs replacing within the next few years, it is cheaper to do that first than to pay to remove and refit the array later.

Your Common Solar Panel Installation Questions Answered

South is ideal, but east and west facing arrays still perform well and often suit a roof better. Shading matters more than orientation: a chimney or a tree shading part of an array reduces output across more of it than people expect.

Yes. Mounting hooks fix through to the rafters and the tile above has to be cut or dressed around the bracket. Doing that properly is what keeps the roof watertight, and it is where most solar-related leaks originate.
