Insulation and ventilation have to be specified together. Adding one without the other causes the problem people usually call us about.

Warm moist air from the house rises into the roof space. If there is not enough ventilation at the eaves and the ridge to carry it away, it condenses on the cold underside of the felt and drips back onto the insulation below. The result looks exactly like a leak, in a roof that is not leaking at all, and over time it rots the timbers it collects on.

Adding more insulation without opening up the ventilation path makes it worse, because the roof space gets colder. Current guidance is around 270mm of mineral wool at ceiling level, but it has to stop short of blocking the eaves, and it must not be compressed, because compressed insulation loses most of its value.
